Reliability in electroplating process.
In-line measurement of plating thickness, deposition rate and current efficiency.

The brand Somonic stands for process measuring technology used in electroplating processes. Somonic represents an innovative technology for the in-line measurement of deposition thickness, deposition rate and current efficiency. For the first time an on-line observation of electroplating and electroless metal deposition is possible in harsh industrial environments.

Case study

In-line measurement of the deposition rate for the process control of a modern electroless nickel plant. A high-quality electroless nickel deposition is a complex task. The deposition rate has to be known to realize a specified deposition thickness. So far, the deposition rate is determined by manual measurements on test samples. The novel in-line measurement allows for the first time a continuous monitoring of the deposition thickness and deposition rate. After describing the principal approach in control of electroless nickel processes the new in-line measurement device is described briefly.
An application example shows the application of the in-line measurement in an electroless nickel plant which was recently put into operation at a large company. The process instruments, installed at three electroless nickel tanks, measure the deposition thickness and rate. The deposition rate is used for automatic calculation of the plating time. First operational experience demonstrates that specified deposition thicknesses can be ensured by use of the measurement device.
